Livelihood Security: Training the Tribal Youth

Training the Tribal Youth

SFT has made inroads in the field of education by setting up a first of its kind BPO training center in Chhota Udepur in 2008, as part of the skill training program under Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojna. The project is being funded by Tribal Development Dept, Govt. of Gujarat. The goal of the project is poverty reduction by doubling the income of tribal youth belonging to BPL families. The project aims to achieve this by building their capabilities for gainful employment in BPO sector and create a sustainable source of income which has tremendous potential to support economic growth. Wealth created thus would impact the socio-economic status of the people and contribute towards further development of the area.

During the year a batch of 99 students in skill training program and 23 students in Tally 2 program completed the training and received the certificates. For the first time campus interviews were attended by Aditya Birla Minacs at BPO center, Chhota Udepur and selected 104 out of 168 trainees for placement. 21 trainees have been placed at Office Beacon Pvt. Ltd. So far 175 BPL youth have been placed in various jobs with average income of Rs.5000/- a month. A couple of trainees have also entered in to data entry business by purchasing computers through bank loan.

Working and living in an urban area, has helped these young people to open up, develop more confidence, become more professional and learn to adjust to new way of life. Their experiences have encouraged other tribal youth to join BPO training centre and look for opportunities in urban set up. Thus exposure to outside world has opened up new opportunities for these youth. Thus exposure to outside world has opened up new opportunities for these youth.
