Located on the border of Madhya Pradesh, Chhota Udepur taluka is one of the most backward tribal areas of Vadodara district. Lack of infrastructure, absence of irrigational facilities, and educational facilities are few of the reasons that ensure the continuity of the circle of poverty.

One of the most glaring facts is the total absence of Primary Health Services. Lack of awareness among the people has resulted in the local population opting for traditional services of Bhuvas. SFT was determined to challenge the existing situation and bring about a visible change in the lackadaisical health care scenario. Its focus was people in general and women and children in particular. Medical camps were organized, awareness was generated by Mahila Swasthya Sangathans and a demand for health services created through this.

Rangpur Medical Center was started in 2001, under Community Health Programs. PHCs in the area are now functioning actively and provide services like round the clock, high risk deliveries, mobile vans providing services at door step. Collaboration between Govt. and Deepak Charitable Trust in the area resulted in activation of PHC sub centers. Here too MSS bodies trained by SFT, play a crucial role.

Banni being a remote area in Kutch District with scattered villages was facing similar problems. Here also PHCs were totally non functional. To add to the woes, the local community being extremely conservative, women were not allowed to go out of their houses except in case of serious health problems. Lack of antenatal care for women was posing serious problems. Through Mahila Swasthya Sangathans, increased awareness was created regarding simple health practices and personal hygiene among the community. The Medical Center in Banni, started in 2005, equipped with drug store, laboratory and facility for minor surgeries, has become a reliable and affordable source, providing diagnostic and curative medical services.
