Observations had revealed that more than half the schools were not functional and that more than 50 % of the children were not attending schools. The community complained of low quality education, whereas the basic problems put forth by the teachers were low attendance, lack of transportation and lack of community support.
The School Support Program (SSP) was initiated with a view to address the problems of the community, the students and the teachers. The primary focus was on education in tribal areas, tackling the problem of drop outs and low enrollments percentage of girls. For the overall development of a child School Vikas Samitis were formed that were formed by students, principal and teachers. The Samiti and the community networked together at large to achieve this goal.
Children’s Saving Scheme (CSS) was started in 18 villages of Padra and Vadodara talukas. This was primarily done to inculcate in children the habit to save and also to steer them away from spending money on habits like gambling and consuming “gutka”. The Samitis now look over the scheme. Similar scheme was introduced in 9 villages of Banni area, in December 2003. 148 children have so far enrolled in the program. Purvi Balmandir, a nursery school, has been adopted by Transpek Industries Ltd. Located near the slums of Atladara, Vadodara; it is being managed by Shroffs Foundation Trust. Children from surrounding areas attend the school.
A month long vacation workshop Killol was organized for children of surrounding villages during summer vacation at Kalali campus. The morning session was conducted by Shri Yagnesh Maharaj of Ram Krishna Mission and it would include shloka recitation, prayers and meditation. Afternoons were spent by working on various projects. Last day at the workshop saw the children presenting cultural programs based on their learnings.
Thus various educational programs undertaken by SFT have brought about far reaching results.
