Education Programs: Gyan Jyot

Gyan Jyot

Beginning by establishing informal education centers after 2001 earthquake in Kutch, SFT has continued to provide support to the local schools through school support programs. Though the education scenario in Banni has improved in last two-three years, there are still some gaps that need to be filled to maximize the benefits for the community.

As part of the birth centenary celebration of the founder, late Shri. Govindji Shroff, ‘Gyan Jyot’ program was launched to fill up the gaps in the existing education system. The objectives were to achieve 100% enrollment and attendance of children in schools including girls. This could be achieved by activating all the School Vikas Samitis. Efforts were made to update the knowledge and skills of the teachers to create an atmosphere that would promote both teaching and learning.

This was done by organizing quiz competitions, essay writing competitions, undertaking small scientific projects, excursion trips to the village pond and grasslands, nature walks as part of informal environment education, sports and cultural programs, vacation workshops on traditional crafts and celebration of festivals.

During the year100% literacy was achieved in 3 villages and 92% in 2 villages. 1147 school children underwent health checkup with the help of PHC. 948 children participated in cultural activities and 742 children in sports activities. 24 schools participated in various projects like rain water harvesting, afforestation, manure making, fodder making, personal cleanliness and school sanitation. 504 women from 11 villages were made literate under literacy campaign.
