Chhota Udepur taluka which is about 105 km from Vadodara on the eastern belt of Gujarat state and border of Madhya Pradesh is one of the most backward areas and is predominantly inhabited by tribal communities like Rathwas. Bhils, Nayakas, Dhanaka and Harijans.
The communities here do not give the deserved importance to literacy and education. They migrate to various other towns and cities in search of livelihood and often take their family along as well to earn a living. Ill-equipped schools, dearth of teachers and parents apathy towards education only magnifies the issue. Their lack of education and literacy makes them especially susceptible to exploitation from various quarters of the society. The situation in Banni is somewhat similar. Around 80 % of people have not received basic literacy in the last five generations.
The Literacy Campaign was undertaken in these two areas with an aim to change the prevailing situation and to empower the people in general and women in particular by way of imparting functional literacy.
