Drugery Reduction Programs: Tool Bank

Tool Bank

Mechanization was almost absent in these areas for performing various operations required for crop production activities. Tractors were non-existent. Farmers, especially their women did all the chores manually from sowing to winnowing. In the bargain, on an average they spent about 15 to 16 hours a day in farm related activities.

To reduce drudgery involved in the agricultural activities, especially for women in tribal area and to increase productivity in terms of farm produce and human productivity, a Tool Bank project was initiated with support of Tribal Development Department of Gujarat in 2010. It also envisaged developing entrepreneurship skills among the community of the area. Introduction of tractors with various attachments, maize shellers and mini mills have helped in reduction of drudgery associated with various farm operations.

10 entrepreneurs were selected and trained to use these equipments and earn their living by giving services to the farmers in surrounding villages. Such services would help the farmers in saving time and energy and help the entrepreneurs to make a living. In the current season, 139 farmers used their services and 5 entrepreneurs earned Rs. 46,000/- in a month. Not only that they were given special training in management, driving, minor repairs, and regular servicing and maintaining the tractors through technical staff.
