Self Reliance through Public Co-operation: Bio-Gas Plant

Women traditionally looked upon as a householder; with changing times now also have to shoulder the responsibility of being a breadwinner. Unfortunately, women, especially in rural areas are also burdened with added drudgery such as collecting fire wood, fetching drinking water, so on and so forth. These strenuous activities make them all the more susceptible to various health problems. This is rather inopportune and needs to be addressed at the earliest.

Another aspect of this issue, using of wood for fuel, is related to the all important ecology at large. Depletion of natural resources is a matter of grave concern and needs to be tackled smartly and seriously. Keeping in mind the need of the hour , a very practical approach to the problem was undertaken. Providing alternative fuel, would not only help in conserving natural resources, but would also help a great deal in reducing the drudgery faced by these women. Hence germinated the pilot project of setting up a bio-gas plant that would provide gas to the villagers. Village Kanas was identified for the same. The easy availability of local resources like dung (gobar) made this initiative all the more feasible.

Honorable Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Narendrabhai Modi was invited to inaugurate the plant and motivate the people of the area. The plant today provides cheap and smoke free fuel gas for cooking. The vermi –compost produced by the bio gas plant has proved to be useful to the farmers in more ways than one. It is not only very effective manure but also reduces irrigational expenses by keeping the soil moist.
