Coping with Floods

SFT undertook Pre-Monsoon Preparedness Program, in collaboration with OXFAM, in 16 villages of Padra and Karjan talukas, situated on river banks of Vishwamitri, Dhadar and Rangva, in June 2006. The program had been commenced with an intention to establish support systems well in advance in order to minimize the loss of material and life when disaster did strike. To make the program effective, local people were involved and their knowledge sought. They were apprised of various possibilities and were trained in use of scientific data and a multi disciplinary approach adopted to train them in crucial areas. A village task force comprising of youth groups, swimmers, first aid providers and volunteers was formed. Linkages with the various government organizations (GOs), and Non- governmental organizations (NGOs) were established through the project.

As the people of the community had already gone through the exercise of preparing themselves to cope with floods there was a sense of self – reliance and results were seen in the form of minimum loss of man and material.
